When medical treatment brings you to Boston, we bring home to you.

While you focus on getting well, we focus on finding you and your caregivers somewhere warm, welcoming and safe to stay during your visit.

Who is eligible to be a guest?

We welcome patients and caregivers who:

  • Live more than 50 miles from the hospital
  • Have a permanent home to return to after their stay
  • Are in active treatment (if staying for a week, patient has at least two appointments)
  • Are an important support for the patient
  • Have never been convicted of a violent or property crime or sexual violation
  • Have not been convicted of a drug or alcohol offense in the last five years
  • Are screened to ensure the host family is not at risk

Where are hosts located?

Hospitality Homes has hosts throughout the Boston area. Most hosts live in areas with access to public transportation (subway or buses) and/or have access to parking.

What do you provide for guests?

As a Hospitality Homes guest, you will be carefully matched with a trained host who will provide you with a clean and comfortable place to stay. Hosts do not provide meals or transportation.

All hosts provide accommodations in their private homes. Guests will have a private bedroom and access to a bathroom (which may be shared).

Other guests, in certain circumstances, may be matched with a furnished apartment or hotel room.

Can my whole family stay?

All patients need to be accompanied by a support person. Hospitality Homes allows a maximum of four guests per night in a volunteer host home. Most of our host homes are best suited for two people.

We love our furry friends as much as you do, but we cannot host any pets. Service dogs can be accommodated only in some furnished apartment housing options.

What are the costs?

Hospitality Homes provides accommodations in host homes at no cost to our guests. If you are financially able, we ask all guests to consider a minimum donation of $25/night. We depend on individual donations, foundations and corporations to cover the administrative costs of making housing matches and recruiting hosts. Our apartment accommodations carry a low cost per night.

Application

Coming to Boston for medical treatment. We make it possible.

Complete an application for housing via our online form. Alternatively, you can call (888) 595-4678 to speak with a member of our staff.

Once you’ve completed the application, a Hospitality Homes staff member will call you to confirm we received it. We may ask for additional information to help us make the best placement.

We encourage you to review the application and placement details below, before you begin.

Background and reference checks

For every potential guest 18 or older, Hospitality Homes completes a criminal background check and requires a character reference. We cannot welcome guests who have been convicted of a violent or property crime or sexual violation. Also, we cannot welcome guests who’ve been convicted of a drug or alcohol offense in the last 5 years.

You will be asked to provide one character reference for each guest who is 18 or older. We ask that the references come from people who are not family members or friends.

Confirming a stay

Placing you with a host family may take anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

As soon as we find housing for you, we will call you and provide information about the host’s home characteristics and approximate distance to your medical facility. If you accept the match, we will send a confirmation email with your host’s contact information. You will be responsible for calling the host within 48 hours of the confirmation to introduce yourself and to make arrangements for your arrival.

If we are not able to match you with a host, we will refer you to other housing options in the area.

Cancellation policy

Guests will be asked to provide a debit or credit card number to complete the confirmation. You will be charged $50 dollars only if you cancel your reservation after confirming with a host. This fee can be waived if your travel plans have been canceled for medical reasons, but you must provide written verification to [email protected] before your scheduled date of arrival.

Our cancellation policy allows us to provide housing matches to as many families as possible.
